What exactly is needed from debian-doc? I don't have time to read this whole
thread now. However, if something specific is needed, I (debian-doc member)
might be able to help.

To be honest, I have mixed up several things into one line :-)
due to frustration.

I have commit access! So I could do the job myself, and I already have
proposed to do so.
And I asked for a confirmation, if it's ok for to do that, and/or if some
additional action is wanted for this, like providing patches before committing
etc.

BTW, in general I feel if you have commit access and some ideas for
improvements: please do go ahead & just commit it. In case somebody finds it's
not good, it can always get reverted. In wikipedia-country it's called "Be
Bold": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Be_bold . I feel in Debian it's
just the same.

devscripts uscan into a bit stable situation, I should work on fixing

Perhaps two more things as proposal:

refcard currently contains

dpkg-reconfigure package-name
Reconfigure a package, e.g. console-common (keyboard),
locales (localisation).

console-common is no longer the relevant package for keyboard configuration
AFAIK, and it is not installed by default. Perhaps that should be changed
into "keyboard-configuration" ?

And I was always uncomfortable with the Apache2 chapter in refcard.
That content is special purpose (for webmasters/system administrators) IMO,
while the rest of the document is for beginners/end users IMO, so that apache
stuff is not suitable here. I would drop it completely.
(Additional benefit: some translations suffer from to little space, so
dropping some content whould lead to the rest being displayed completely,
maybe.)

What do you think?

And the version numbering of the refcard should reflect the
Debian release. E.g. refcard 8 for Jessie, 9 for Stretch etc.

PS: As many free software - or documentation for that matter -
the refcard has been created to scratch a personal itch. We
started using Debian with Apache etc. in the company and my
colleagues needed to know some commands. So there was the
refcard and a German publisher printed it, some universities
used it for their classes, many people translated it, etc.

Hmm, I am just a translator, so I am probably lacking some knowledge
about the development in Debian. That's why I am unable to understand
what is meant here:
In Jessie, apt-get and apt-cache are valid commands, as well as the

The new apt commands are (IMHO) nicer, esp. for new users,
not only because of the colourful output:

apt-get update -> apt update
apt-get upgrade -> apt upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade -> apt full-upgrade
apt-cache show pkg -> apt show pkg
apt-cache search str -> apt search str
apt-cache policy pkg -> apt list -a pkg
apt-get remove pkg -> apt remove pkg

Some of the new systemd commands are (IMHO) more powerful and they
do not differ between distributions:

/etc/init.d/service start -> systemctl start "service".service
/etc/init.d/service status -> systemctl status "service".service
/etc/init.d/service stop -> systemctl stop "service".service
/etc/init.d/service restart -> systemctl restart "service".service
halt -> systemctl halt
reboot -> systemctl reboot
poweroff -> systemctl poweroff
hibernate -> systemctl hibernate
suspend -> systemctl suspend

A lot of this stuff is still missing in the refcard - yet another
reason to drop the Apache section. I wonder, whether make-kpkg or
m-a still deserve a place in the refcard?

Sounds sensible to me.
So I have prepared a diff (attached) which addresses:
- change the versioning scheme
- update content (command strings for apt, sysvinit/systemd, console config)
- drop content (Apache, Samba, make-kpkg, m-a)

As a second step, I could unfuzzy most translations, since the command
strings ("apt-get install", "/etc/init.d/service start" etc.) are not translated
in all translated languages, so no work from translators would be strictly
required. That would mean, that translation statistic would be not so bad after
this...

Please comment! Especially on the changing of the versioning, since
I am not a developer.

I had to investigate the new apt command for "apt-cache showpkg <name>",
which is "apt show -a <name>".

Done (including unfuzzying trivial changes in translations).

While updating the german translation, I came to some more minor things:
- add <replaceable>..</replaceable> tag to some package names
- move 'kill -9 PID' behind 'ps' and add some explanation for kill / PID

That's IMO not adequate.

Sorry if this is confusing.
1) "Localisation" is the en_GB spelling for which the equivalent in
en_US is "localization". There are a few cases where one
spelling standard or the other has taken over completely
("computer program", not "programme"; "compact disc", not
"disk"); but this isn't one of them, so to know how to spell
"localisation", we have to know what locale we're using!
2) Nobody is suggesting replacing -ation words with -ing words.
3) Abbreviations in the style of "i18n" started in the eighties at
DEC (where a guy named Scherpenhuizen famously got an email
address as "S12N"), so l10n originally stood for localiZation.

I'm still not sure what locale debian-refcard is meant to be using,
though.

As far as I see, I'm personally done with changes on English.
Maybe it would be a good time to issue a call for translation updates?

And: could someone look into the syntax for the copyright notes in
English? Currently only one copyright name is displayed, no matter how
many are in the refcard.dbk file.

do not be afraid;
this does not need much skill; junior high or high school is enough

position() just goes step by step, so
this is where position() = 1:
<copyright>
<year>2004</year>
<year>2010</year>
<holder>W. Martin Borgert</holder>
</copyright>
and this is where position() = 2:
<copyright>
<year>2004</year>
<year>2010</year>
<holder>Your Name ("Language")</holder>
</copyright>

assumed you want new copyright like
<copyright>
<year>2016</year>
<holger>Holger Wansing</holger>
</copyright>
at the 2nd position,
you want a condition that exclude #2 in addition to #1
position() is a natural number so you can use a condition
that matches 3 and greater

so it will look like:
copyright[position() > 2]

in the command row

in the description row
"<emphasis>C</emphasis>reate, e<emphasis>X</emphasis>tract, list <emphasis>T</"

all of actual options here are lowercase,
the uppercase letter should not be used
so it should be:
<emphasis>c</emphasis>reate, e<emphasis>x</emphasis>tract, list <emphasis>t</
...

additionally, recent .deb packages are using xz for compression,
it should mention "J for .xz" even if the column needs one more line

so these strings will become like:
"tar <optional>c</optional><optional>x</optional><optional>t</"
"optional><optional>z</optional><optional>j</optional><optional>J</"
"optional> -f <replaceable>file</replaceable>.tar <literal> </literal> "
"<optional><replaceable>files</replaceable></optional>"
