Package: release-notes
Severity: normal

Starting with glibc 2.31-4, NSS NIS and NIS+ support has been moved to separate
packages called libnss-nis and libnss-nisplus. glibc initially depended
on those packages, but apt is unable to handle the upgrade, so they are
now only recommended.

On systems using NIS or NIS+, it is therefore recommended to check that
those packages are correctly installed after the upgrade.

I've already had this problem with this missing library on a new
installation of bullseye. It took me quite some time to find the cause
of the problem, even though I'm a DD and have more than 20 years of
sysadmin experience.

The error messages also did not helped me, because it only said
unknown user.

Hi,

Thomas: Thanks for adding this information, it does sound serious enough. A
draft text or patch for
https://salsa.debian.org/ddp-team/release-notes/-/blob/master/en/issues.dbk
under "Package specific issues" would be needed. (I myself lack the time now.)

HTH,

Joost

I have the attached local patch ready to push.
