Debian refcard: call to update translation for Traditional Chinese
(too old to reply)

Hi all,

We have recently updated the content of Debian refcard for Stretch.

Since the last translator for your language (in CC) did not respond, I would
like to ask, if someone here is willing to take the time to update the
translation for Traditional Chinese.

A browseable web interface for the subversion repository can be found on
http://anonscm.debian.org/viewvc/ddp/manuals/trunk/refcard/

You can checkout the source code for refcard with
svn co svn://svn.debian.org/svn/ddp/manuals/trunk/refcard refcard

Or feel free to drop me a mail, I can sent you the po file via mail,
if you prefer.

Please file a wishlist bug against the refcard package, or sent the
file directly to me, when you have the translation ready.

Feel free to ask, if you have any questions.

Many thanks

Holger

Based on that file, I have built the pdf for Traditional Chinese, for
proofreading.
* The title is broken in Okular.

* Found by victory, the "Tranditional Chinese" shall be "Traditional
Chinese" in copyright section.

* There are some layout problems in entry for CUPS and tar. The table is
too small for the content.

* As for font, I think it will be better to use
"Noto Sans CJK TC Regular" in fonts-noto-cjk package for Traditional
Chinese, and other font for Western character.

That's easy to fix :-)

victory has already worked on some method, to change the build chain for
CJK languages, this might probably be a chance to get layout and font problems
fixed as well.
That's why I have asked today on some lists, which fonts should be used
for those languages...

actually, first I did edit intermediate file to specify fonts,
then thought ways to do the same w/o ugly hack
such as running sed or shell script in the process

I wanted to use "default fonts" for latin langs
so tried to locate <xsl:param ...> inside the condition, etc.
but xsl/tex do not allow them :(

AFAICS fonts-noto-cjk package is only in unstable and jessie-backports, so
that's probably not suitable for the buildds? (at least as long as
Jessie is stable)

For printed documents, maybe Arphic Ming (fonts-arphic-uming) is a good
choice, but there are some limitations:

1. Traditionally there is no italic in Chinese typesetting, so for
stressing it is better using Hei (Gothic) fonts, for example, Noto Sans
CJK, or alternatively, Droid Sans Fallback (fonts-droid-fallback), which is
popular in Android prior to Android 5.0.

2. Most of the free typefaces in Chinese (other than Noto Sans CJK/Source
Han Sans) do not provide native bold font, and fonts in faux bold looks
badly shaped. Could it be possible avoiding them?

(To Holger: I forgot to hit Reply All and the email was sent before I found
it was only to you. Sorry.)

I have played around with different font settings like
<!-- zh_CN centric: ttf-arphic-gbsn00lp, ttf-wqy-zenhei -->
<xsl:text>\usepackage{xeCJK}
</xsl:text>
<xsl:text>\setCJKmainfont{AR PL SungtiL GB}
</xsl:text>
<xsl:text>\setCJKsansfont{WenQuanYi Zen Hei}
</xsl:text>
<xsl:text>\setCJKmonofont{WenQuanYi Zen Hei Mono}
</xsl:text>
<!-- zh_TW centric: ttf-arphic-bsmi00lp, ttf-wqy-zenhei -->
<xsl:text>\usepackage{xeCJK}
</xsl:text>
<xsl:text>\setCJKmainfont{AR PL Mingti2L Big5}
</xsl:text>
<xsl:text>\setCJKsansfont{WenQuanYi Zen Hei}
</xsl:text>
<xsl:text>\setCJKmonofont{WenQuanYi Zen Hei Mono}
</xsl:text>
<!-- other font for Western characters -->
<xsl:text>\setmainfont{Liberation Serif}
</xsl:text>
<xsl:text>\setsansfont{Liberation Sans}
</xsl:text>
<xsl:text>\setmonofont{Liberation Mono}
</xsl:text>
in various mixtures, but I never got any satisfying result.
(I'm not a dblatex | texlive geek though.)
The only successful built variant is with HanaMina font (patch for that
provided by victory, thanks! ).
The file refcard-zh_TW-a4.pdf for Traditional Chinese is attached.
Could you take a look please?
1. the translation work for zh_TW
2. displaying / rendering of the characters
and give a statement of what you think on these two topics?
Many thanks

Hi, Hoger,

Seems OK, Great job!
Post by Holger Wansing
Hi all,
Hi, Hoger,
The ZH_CN Debian Reference Card pdf version has some wrong font encoding
and can't display as well.
We can use "WenQuanYi Zen Hei" or "WenQuanYi Micro Hei" for Chinese
language (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WenQuanYi),
as I already wrote in another mail, I failed to built the refcard for
Traditional Chinese with various different fonts, only building with
HanaMinA succeeded.
This also applies to Simplified Chinese, so here is a pdf for zh_CN,
refcard-zh_CN-a4.pdf attached.
Please note, that there is one string untranslated in the pdf
( Create, eXtract, list Table of archive file, z for .gz, j for .bz2,
J for .xz. )
This is known, it's because of a not fully up-to-date translation,
due to a last-minute-change by me, sorry for this!
Could you take a look please?
Proofreading for the translation was already done by yanliang tang, so
I would expect no big issues here.
But please have an eye on displaying / rendering of the characters!
and give a statement of what you think.
Many thanks
Holger

1. the translation work for zh_TW
2. displaying / rendering of the characters
* Translation and displaying / rendering are good for me. The CUPS and
tar now has enough room to display the whole text.

* The title is still broken.

Could you please explain, what exactly you mean with
" The title is still broken. " ?
What "title" do you mean? What's wrong with it?

Ah wait, probably you mean the 'title' field in the metadata?

Please see the attachment, the red circle is the broken title I
mentioned. It is not Traditional Chinese at all. I guess maybe we use
the wrong font, or wrong encoding.

Hi,
The metadata title of the PDF which is also shown in the title bar of
Okular or Evince is broken.
Ok, I see.
While the same string is correct within the pdf page itself.

That has already been reported by other languages, like French.
And that was already the case in previous versions of refcard.

Since the translation is correctly provided as UTF-8, I don't know what to
do about this, I fear.
(As already mentioned before, I'm not a dblatex guru or something like that.)
